Who we are

Coulter Legal is one of Victoria’s largest regionally based law firms, with offices in Geelong, Melbourne, the Surf Coast, the Bellarine Peninsula, and South Australia. We are proud to be a leading law firm with a difference: we genuinely care about our people, our clients, and our community.

We embrace innovation and continuously evolve our legal processes to deliver exceptional outcomes. Our success is built on the contributions of every team member, and we believe that recruiting the right people is key to our growth and sustainability.

About the role

We are seeking a highly motivated, professional, and knowledgeable Senior Associate with well‑developed expertise across a broad spectrum of corporate and commercial matters. Our Corporate & Commercial team advises on the purchase and sale of businesses, corporate structuring, intellectual property, franchising, and related commercial arrangements. To excel in this role, you must bring solid, demonstrated experience in these areas and the capability to deliver specialised, tailored advice to a diverse client base ranging from SMEs to large national organisations.

A strong focus on client relationships is essential. We work closely with our clients to build strategic and cohesive partnerships. We value people who can think creatively, problem‑solve, improve processes, and communicate with clarity. This includes not only managing complex transactions but also presenting to current and prospective clients and supporting business development.

We are looking for someone who thrives in both autonomous and collaborative environments. You will be working closely with Principal Lawyers and Special Counsels and supporting early‑career lawyers through mentoring and guidance, meaning strong leadership and interpersonal skills are key. The ability to maintain accuracy, attention to detail, and efficient time management in a busy practice area is particularly valued. A desire to build and grow a practice within a dynamic team while aligning with our values is fundamental.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing accurate, timely and considered commercial advice, including in the areas of sale and purchase of businesses and corporate structuring, and ideally, experience in IP and franchising.
  • Providing outstanding client service, including onboarding new clients
  • Managing multiple tasks efficiently and accurately, including deadline and reminder management
  • Maintaining control of priorities through effective time management
  • Accuracy and attention to detail

What you’ll bring:

  • At least five years post-admission experience in a commercial team
  • Demonstrated experience in general commercial law
  • Demonstrated experience in building client relationships
  • Exceptional organisational and file management skills with a high level of attention to detail
  • A positive, proactive, and flexible attitude
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team
  • Exposure to franchising and general commercial matters (desirable but not essential)

Why join us?

At Coulter Legal, we foster a culture of high performance, engagement, and community connection. Our values guide everything we do, and we seek like-minded individuals who share our commitment to excellence and integrity.

You will be part of a supportive team where your skills and experience can grow. We offer a range of benefits, including:

  • Flexible working options
  • Generous parental leave program
  • Floating public holidays
  • Health and wellbeing initiatives
  • Opportunities to volunteer and give back to the community
  • Purchase leave program
  • A genuinely inclusive and welcoming culture
  • Access to ongoing training and professional development
