Paula N Chavez

Paula has extensive experience and expertise in IP and technology related commercial law, IP disputes and dispute resolution, and IP Procurement, including at a global level. She earned a physics degree from UCLA and a JD from Loyola Marymount University in California before becoming a California lawyer and a US patent attorney. Paula practised in the Silicon Valley, California and in Portland, Oregon before moving to France where she worked for Motorola Mobility (mobile devices) for many years.

After arriving in Australia in 2010, she was a patent examiner at IP Australia. In 2014 she was licensed to practise law by the NSW Law Society, and then in 2018 to practise patent at a patent attorney by the Trans-Tasman IP Attorney Board. Since then, she has practised IP and technology related commercial law and IP dispute and dispute resolution while maintaining her IP procurement practice.

In her IP procurement practice, she is an expert on software, electronics, mechanical and communications technologies patenting. She is also an expert on trade marks and designs procurement. She is an IP strategy expert and has managed her clients' IP portfolios while her clients' businesses grow.

Her interests include promoting a knowledge-based economy in Australia and she has authored several peer reviewed papers on the subject.
