Australian Government announces visa extension for Hong Kong Citizens

Here is what we know:

On the 9 July 2020, the Morrison Government announced that Australia will be extending their visas for eligible Hong Kong residents – this includes students, skilled workers and businesses. This will include a pathway to permanent residency.

What does this mean for Hong Kong residents already in Australia?

It was announced that Hong Kong residents holding a student visa, temporary graduate visa or skilled working visa will be able to extend their visa for another 5 years in addition to the time they have already spent here.

It is estimated that there are nearly 10,000 Hong Kong residents currently living in Australia as a student, skilled or temporary graduate visa.

These visa holders will be able to apply for permanent residency provided they meet the occupational skills and labour market testing requirements.

Priority will be given to those Hong Kong Citizens who are highly skilled and are eligible to apply under the Global Talent Independent Program.

There will also be economic incentives for Hong Kong Businesses who are looking to relocate their headquarters to Australia.

Keep updated with us on more announcements to be made.
